We recently bought an older home and discovered it had hardwood after removing the lovely green carpeting!   The wood looks like oak but is a very yellow-orange colour and in some places has black areas that look like stains.   Can we could salvage the floors by refinishing them?

It’s not uncommon to find hardwood in older homes.  Fifty years ago it was quite reasonable to install hardwood and in some cases was necessary to get a mortgage!  The colour of the wood now is due to the finish oxidizing and/or having some type of underlay sitting on it for a number of years.  During the refinishing that old finish is removed and the wood, if it’s oak will return to its natural blond colour.   The dark stains you're finding are usually due to water or pet urine; the wood itself has been damaged.   The only way to fix this is by replacing the damaged boards, which is usually unnoticeable.

Something to consider now if you want to keep it natural or add a stain and the type of finish you would like, ie, glossy, semi –gloss, or matte.
